ants in my pants lesson 56
Ants in my pants
I had just purchased a piece of land in Nicaragua. The weeds were 3 feet tall. I asked my only employee at the time how many workers to rid the field of weeds within a week. He, Manuel, estimated 10 women 6 days and i'll have to pay for seven days. some Communist law, in 1982 the Sandinista ruled. Monday morning , 8 am Manuel and my ten women showed up. They showed up with babies on their backs and children by the hand. 10 women five babies and 15 children. I had wondered why the weeding would take a week. All 32 of us made our way to the edge of the property and i was explaining were to start and were to finish when I felt my skin from the waist down start to crawl. and then all at once I met and got to know FIRE ANTS! The pain was terrible. I took down my pants, I danced around swatting and screaming like a girl. I know I'll never forget that day , I can only imagine what all those women and children remember. imagine------- my reply to a movie "brokeback mountain"
imagine being alone , alone with someone for a long time, isolated. the feeling comes over you. a need to be closer, to be together. alone for weeks, months. you fall in love and then sleep together. just people, not male, not female, just people alone in love.
is this human nature, a means to survive? is this a sex drive? is this a freaky fling? or just love?
love is natural and beautiful, two people alone, in love, completely. johnny♥

true story
when i was 30 i loved to travel,i was renting a large beautiful home in Central America. i traveled to a small Indian village 10 miles from town and met a young Mayan Indian 14 or 15 years old, wonderful Indian features, typical clothing and a language not Spanish but Mayan. i purchased some weaving from her ,she offered to bring me more on Sunday as her family came to town Sundays.
Sunday came around, i couldn't wait, i had books with pictures(we didn't speak the same language) soft drinks ,snacks. she arrived sat down and we spoke for hours. she wore the same clothing and in addition 30 or so sets of beads around her neck (this is no insult) she had the odor of a wet dog and death. i asked if she would return, each Sunday , i always purchased her weaving.
on about the fifth Sunday we spoke for maybe 8 - 10 hours, i was learning so much. i asked what her family did in town on Sundays ,she said they wait. WAIT! what wait? out front they wait. i went to the front door and there sat mom, dad, sister brother, baby, maybe even grandma. shocked i wondered this is a marriage age girl in there culture, I'm single, we visit together on Sundays for hours and hours and her family even had a fire , camped out at my front door, how stupid could i be.
well all cooled off my wife and i are friends of hers to this day, i was 30, wow.

life lesson shyness and depression
shyness and depression {in artists}
what gives me authority to speak to you on this --is i have both of these problems or at least i had them--i feel i'm a expert on me.
the symptoms of my shyness --i was afraid to ask for items in stores--i couldn't talk in public even if that was two people.
the symptoms of my depression-- i was sure my grandchildren would die.--i knew EVERYTHING was out of my control, i cried.
my cure-- i thought i needed a psychiatrist, but no , i saw my doctor , i wrote down my problems , he prescribed PAXIL. within three
days i was happy, no fear, no shyness, i could talk in front of co-workers in short a new man. a year later my doctor recommended a new
pill, i said no way, he had free samples , i tried it with the same wonderful results. that was LEXAPRO. take this note to your doctor
and get on with your LIFE. essmaker

in 1983 i lived in the central American country of Guatemala. a small war was raging between the USA friendly government and the communist insurgents trained in Cuba and their local recruits. tourism was a major income producer for the government,if the insurgents could scare off the tourist the dollars would dry up and the government could be destabilized.
one afternoon i was at the Guatemalan airport waiting for a friend arriving from Miami on Eastern Airways. i always arrive early, and this time the plane was late. i wandered around. there was a larger window overlooking the gate area where the plane would park. the baggage to be loaded onto the plane returning to Miami was coming out of the terminal and as it hit the bottom of the conveyor a worker would lift it onto a cart. as i stood there alone BLAM! (bombs don't go boom) BLAM! the building shook. the workman was in pieces, a head and two arms gathering intestines. not to be involved in any way i started walking fast in the other direction, coming toward me a group of people who heard the bang. i thought it looked strange me the only one running the other direction i joined the gang and went back.
the first to show up were the firemen and ambulance.the medics picked up the largest pieces and drove away. the firemen washed the rest down a nearby drain. the police showed up and started to fill out a report, the plane arrived, i told my friend "let's get out of here" outside the media was just arriving and the army was shutting down the airport. the only good news i have is the baggage would have been on Eastern to Miami if the plane had been on time. john

never lie life lesson 18
never lie:
as you go though life never lie, it's so easy, you never have to remember what you told someone, whatever it was, it was the truth. there might be confusion, the facts may not match, one thing for certain," you didn't lie". some day you'll start a business. you may employ one person or many. they'll never see you lie and demand they don't lie. maybe you'll have a customer claim -he was quoted a different price, your employee can reply with confidence "he may have quoted you that price, he may have been wrong, one thing for sure is- he didn't lie". you, your employees and your business will gain untold respect in the community because you never lie.

dancing 1979 life lesson 17
here is a story i can tell;;it was 1979 the end of the disco era. i was in HONDURAS , i was in a bar. they had a plastic dance floor with colored lights underneath. a disco ball overhead. Central America seem to be like five years behind the USA on most things . the young people like to stay right uptodate on our music. i stayed in this LATIN DISCOTECH , had a few drinks, (i no longer drink alcohol, a recommendation i make to everyone i meet) yes i had a few drinks then a local girl wanted me to dance. {here comes the story.} about 30 -50 young people were dancing to some America disco, fast, music. i never did know how to dance, i was never afraid to try, i was wiggling ans shaking ,each beat of the music my feet would move. then i shot both hands into the air and 100 hands flew up there too! i moved my hands to the side and so did everyone else. they all wanted to be just like the GRINGO! holly cow! JOHN TRAVOLTA i spun around WOW! so did everyone else. this went on for a good hour and when i was done, they begged for more. it's good to leave your mark, i sure did.
hurricane andrew 1992 life lesson 16
hurricane Andrew 8/29/92 homestead Florida
i'm john, i had a wife and two girl 9 and 7 and a dog. we lived in a old wooden house, built in 1920 up on cement blocks 24" off the ground. we had a few neighbours though you couldn't see them for the palm trees and shrubs. it was a hot sunny day, the air was still.the hurricane off the coast of florida had taken a turn and seemed to be heading straight for our home. by the time you decide to leave the area it's to late, the highways leading out are blocked by those trying to leave.
the day went quite normal i remember my wife and i were getting the outside ready for a high wind. late in the day ,for the first time i put my dog in a shed with my washer and dryer food and water. the poor dog looked at me wondering what he had done to deserve this punishment.
i took my old car out of the garage and my new 1992 car went in. i always believed in having plenty of supplies on hand. a diesel pump for water a propane tank gigantic, a generator for electricity, i feel we could hold out 60 - 90 days on what we had.v it started getting dark, the television blaring "category 5". for the first time fear swept over me. i felt alone. about that time some friends came over and asked what we were going to do. the streets were parking lots, we couldn't leave. i mentioned our home had been there since 1920 and it's up on blocks, i was hoping they would stay, now i was scared! they stayed two more men , two more women and some kids.
we divided up the house i showed them my supplies, they were so thankful and so was i.
we all fell asleep before midnight. i said if the wind is bad it'll wake us up. about 4 am we were all awake.
a wind maybe 70 miles per hour MPH was starting to move things around. 80 MPH and the lights go out.
i had wired a extra automobile headlight to a car battery. we were in the dark except for that glaring bright light

disasters 2 life lesson 15
i could watch that all day! maybe it's not good for us to think to deep and long on those things we can't control. i'm affraid it will lead to DEPRESSION. the volcano last month, the oil spill, even worse yellow stone eruption, the methane in the oceans release, a solar burst, gamma ray burst from space. people ask: what happened to the mayan, the inca, maybe atlantis? if we dwell on these problems and how they could effect our families how can we not be depressed? when i was young i wanted to see "the big picture", "think out of the box". now at a young 60 i keep my world small, i no longer watch the evening news. i tell young people : stay out of the big cities, purchase a gun and keep it in the box, i don't want to be a crazy waiting for THE BIG ONE! i survived hurricane andrew, that was small compared to "other " things. i know what i'm talking about, sorry. john
discrimination life lesson 14
If any subject ever needed discussing this does!
Two years ago here on this site, I took a stand against nudity/pornography and took a tongue lashing from almost everyone including my best friends. you made it quite clear how important our freedom of speech and civil rights were and the smallest limitation or restriction would weaken all civil rights. I backed down.
Something has recently taken place in the state of Arizona that weakens all civil rights. let me name a few for our younger members. freedom of- speech, assembly, religion, right to bear arms, unreasonable search and seizures are just a few, weaken one you weaken them all.
On April 23, 2010, Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona signed SB1070 into law. SB1070 empowers police officers to stop and interrogate any individual about his immigration status if they have "reasonable suspicion". IT'S a crime to be an undocumented person in Arizona. It has no safeguards against racial profiling and the likelihood of arbitrary arrest and detention. This was brought to my attention by a fellow artist. I'm a German, my wife is a Mayan Indian. We won't be passing through Arizona any time soon.
any comments on this? ............john essmaker..............

disasters in general life lesson 13
some problems are beyond comprehension. volcanoes, meteors etc. i feel it's better for the general population not be told of these disasters. they are out of our control. most people can't handle the truth. i survived hurricane Andrew, when government breaks down, as it did, you need food , water and a gun! a big gun as i had. everyone, even the meek break into survival mode , then look out! john

"YOU DON"T HAVE TO BE SMART TO SPEND YOUR MONEY".life lesson 2
" You don't have to be smart to spend your money".
As I was growing up in the1950's and 1960's I did well in school, really didn't give a damn though. My best friend Doug, he did just a little better than me, he showed respect for "the system". My teachers and parents never took the time,"or maybe i wasn't listening" to even tell me there was a "system".Well I'm telling you now.
I was hoping to do something exciting with my life and I did. Always a good paying job. Always something exciting. I left the country for a while. I would do my job until there was a little falling out, then I had to kiss some-body's ass to keep my job. There was nothing to fall back on if I lost my job. I never saved a dime. So it was a tough life, kissing a lot ass but i sure ate in some beautiful restaurants. Yes I had a lot of fun along the way. I'm retired now,I rent a awesome apartment, I have a computer, and I'm happy.
Now in my 60s. I took a trip back to the old town to visit my friend Doug. When I left he was headed off for community college, at the time that was kind of a joke. And I guess he only did about a year and a half there, that not being enough to get his associates degree, which he was after. He took a few poor paying jobs. They built a K-Mart down the street. He became their janitor and he shined their floors for 20 years. That was kind of a joke also. He lived in the small house his mom and dad left him, the same street he was born on. Within a few years, he purchased the neighbors house and rented it out. When he was 40 he purchased another house and 50 another house, in the end he had his own home and four more houses on the same street. He never did more than shine floors. Sometimes he would take a night job and clean other floors. I don't believe he ever traveled more than 100 miles from home. He has a boat, a snowmobile and he did that working inside the system.
He stayed within the system, saved his money slow and steady and he seems to have everything. On the other hand I traveled thousands of miles. I learned to speak another language. Always a high paying job. I had a very erotic and exotic life. Always spending every dime i earned. I'm very happy. My friend Doug stayed in the system, that means you get up every day and go to work. You do what your boss tells you, you get your paycheck and put it in the bank. You have dinner at home, you don't go out to dinner. On the weekends you work on your house and your buddies car and just save your money. Maybe you invest a little. On the other hand, I didn't give a damn. Just a wonderful life---------------- but it's all over now. Every time the system came up in front of me. "I would find a way around it. I would just blow it off. Find another way around, yes, I was a expert at finding another way around the right way to do things. I figured i was a smart guy traveling all the time. My friend would just go work in the morning put his money in the bank and buy another house. His kids live on the same street. My kids won't visit me.
Please listen to me, stay in school, go to college, save your money now, start today-------------"you don't have to be smart to spend you money".

life lesson 9 costa rica
insane
i was a real adventurous young man, 29 years old in central America on business. i had a friend, he was a local, good looking strong. one trip we made to costa rica ,the country was proud , holding some international road race, my friend otto traveling for his first time asked me a few questions about immigrations , i told him to say he was my driver and he was here working.
we arrived by air, i entered one long immigration line, he another , we lost track of each other. soon there was a large commotion, tv crews, crowds. otto came out the other side with lipstick on his cheek. otto had told the immigration officer he was A DRIVER WORKING IN COSTA RICA. mistaking him for a international race car driver, they gave him roses, miss costa rica kissed him, he was on tv, he caught up with me saying how friendly these people were.
P.S.---one night soon after, otto had lost his girlfriend , we went out for a few beers. about 6 hours later (he always carried a hand gun for protection, my protection) we were talking about his lost love, he pulled out his gun , started waving it around yelling in Spanish" if you want to kill me , kill me." all the other patrons were under the tables, the women screaming. i stood up put my hands on the gun and pointed it at the ceiling. as we danced around i started to think of my wife and kids back in the USA. did they know what i was doing right now?
i just slid my hands down his arms and walked away.he was shot 3 times small caliber, didn't kill him.

life lesson 11 ford and edison
Edison and Ford destroyed America
i hate to say it--just 100 years ago, just one long lifetime---we have gone from 1 car and one light bulb -- small communities where your kids went to school with your friends kids, your husband worked with your neighbors--if there was a discipline problem we could discuss it after church.
now does you husbands coworkers know your kids school teacher? when your family needs help does the pastor talk it over with you and you husband after church ,your kids teacher in attendance?
ford worked for Edison, Edison was first with mass production, ford took off on his own around 1900. within 30 years he had 80,000 employees pumping out enough cars that everyone could own one . as soon as a road was built your husband could travel out of your community to work and a school teacher could come from 20 miles away!
the beginning of the end of communities --the beginning of pollution -- 40,000 people die in traffic accidents every year in the USA.--wars are fought over oil --damn
Edison and ford probably sped along the nuclear age i don't know. as a boy these men were hero's. 1900's hero's. sorry to rant i miss the communities i don't want a car.

win friends and influence artists
when commenting on another artist work, please say "YOU" at least once 5 times if you can. never say "me, my, mine,i" try this with your family, friends,co-workers, no one wants to hear about you and your stuff. they love to tell all about their stuff. never say me, always say you. you'll thank me.

life lesson 1 maya 2010
Mayan glyphs
these images and a thousand more belong to the mayan culture of 1000 years ago, carved into rock all over central america
i feel close to the maya as i was hiding from the army(not the USA army) i found myself in a mayan ruins on the border between honduras and another country, i was arrested by the immigration police and taken to the airport and asked to leave(that's where i wanted to go in the first place). while in the ruins i saw these glyphs. since then many artists have drawn them, the mayan own them.

marriage and divorce
a marriage doesn't begin anything that hasn't already begun and a divorce doesn't end anything that hasn't already ended.don't expect anything to change with either that has not already changed.love begins before a marriage and love ends before a divorce.you are your only guarantee of happiness. so just be happy.

life lesson 4 my struggle 2010
my struggle 2010
War can blind- 1969
I’ve seen my friend blown in two
Hiding in the jungle-blinded by blood
Surrounded by screaming - this fear in my head
War, a romantic affair- your comrade screaming with pain.
Not knowing what to do-I wrote a letter for you
stained in my friends blood- more than a year we’ve been apart.
Holding his gut in place
Blood in my eyes -a gun to his head-the fear overwhelming- he’s dead.

life lesson 3 moronga
moronga
in Latin America if you order a beer the bar will give you a small plate of snacks free. one long evening we drank most of the bars beer and all their snacks. i was getting a little loud, "snacks", "SNACKS!". one ugly American. well soon enough came a large plate of black meat cubes toothpicks and all, i ate and drank ate drank, i must have eaten a pound of this cubed black meat (morunga).
the next day i was dieing, laying on a couch , blood poisoning, wanting to die. they sent for a doctor and in the meanwhile my mother inlaw (here's the art tie in, the art of voodoo) she took an egg passed it all over my dieing body , head to toe, i could care less. she broke the egg into a glass of water, examined it, pointed out to bystanders the blood. the doctor showed up and i survived.
the next day #1 my wife said the egg had worked, i giggled, she said "the next time do you want her to cure you?" i said without hesitation "YES"
#2 my wife said "last night, where were you? what did you do all night? what did you eat? i said "morunga". "MORONGA" yes. do you know what that is? every day they kill a pig, they don't have refrigeration, the blood sits in a pan until it gets a little hard then they cut it into little cubes.

life lesson 8 LEAD DON"T FOLLOW 2010
on renting gallery space. life lesson
I'm 60. as you go threw life,if you want to make something of yourself, never give up control of your life to anyone else. examples might be: rent a space in a studio and do what they tell you, maybe you can't use the space at 2am. if you can't buy , rent a large space, rent to other artists and the, gallery , will have "your name" on the front door. you take a chance, you might fail, you start again. take it the easy way and you'll never make anything of yourself, you won't succeed. even if some of you young artists are starting out and need to share a apartment, don't rent a room in some friends space. you take the chance, rent alone then find YOUR renter. i lived this life lesson, you should listen. i know you'll remember this the rest of your life. succeed or fail....................your "old" friend john
